In late 2017, the Government of Kosovo signed an agreement with US company ContourGlobal on the construction of coal-fired thermal power plant Kosova e Re, a project worth 1.3 billion euros.
According to the agreement, the construction of the plant should start in 2018 and it should be commissioned in 2023. TPP Kosova e Re will have power output of 500 MW, with 40 % efficiency and estimated operational life of 40 years. However, the signed agreement does not guarantee that Kosovo will get a new TPP in line with new, stricter EU environmental standards.
